Herdade do Rocim

Introduction

The Herdade do Rocim is an estate located between Vidigueira and Cuba, in the Lower Alentejo, com approximately 120 hectares, among which 70 are vineyards and 10 are of olive tress.
Bought in 2000 by Movicortes, S.A., and with project development coordinated by Engª Catarina Vieira, the following years were characterised by restructuring and qualification, accomplished with the plantation of most of the vineyards that now constitute the total productive area of the Herdade. This establishment procedure was made following specific criteria that enabled the production of high quality grapes.

The Winery is a structuring element of the project of the Herdade do Rocim, that allies the wine production to the aesthetics quality of its architecture and functions as a promotional element to the re-qualification of the region.

In the Herdade do Rocim all efforts are concentrated in the objective of doing well, always improving, and with an unchanging concern with the quality of the wine.

After ten years investing in the improvement of the existing vineyards, the plantation of new vineyards and the construction of the Winery are now part of a rewarded high quality corporate initiative.

 

The Vineyard


The Herdade do Rocim has 70 hectares of vineyards, with 53 hectares of red grape varieties and the remainder 17 hectares with white grape varieties.

Initially, the Herdade had 20 hectares of old vineyard, 50% red grape varieties, and the remainder 10 hectares with white grape varieties, mainly Antão Vaz. Between 2001 and 2011, the 50 hectares that complete the vineyard where planted.

In each annual cycle, the vineyard suffers several interventions to control the robustness and the micro climate affecting the grapes, and enabling the improvement of photosynthesis, maturation and the health condition of the grapes. Some of the required interventions that take place at the very beginning of the annual cycle include the cutting of some excess or less quality branches, thus controlling and adapting the density of the shrub; at a later stage, there is also the qualitative removal of entire bunches as well as leaves of a lesser quality, ensuring the homogeneity and high quality of all grapes to be used in wine production.

At the Herdade do Rocim, harvest is made the traditional way and Man plays a central role. Men and women, with pruning scissors, harvest in line, putting the grapes in 12kg boxes. These boxes are then transported to the winery.

Vineyard, design winery, pedagogical vineyard, garden, shop, wine bar, amphitheatre, spacious and multi-purpose areas. The Herdade do Rocim incorporates distinguishing prospects and purposes for social events or simple gatherings with friends, and guided tours in the winery. After visiting the winery, you can taste and buy the wine produced in the Herdade, as well as other products related to wine and Alentejo.

Guided tour with lunch - Prices under consult. Only per reservation, menus are presented by request. These menus reflect the gastronomy that characterizes the Lower Alentejo. This option depends on availability.

 

Harvest Programs:

Available for small groups during the harvest season, they depend on reservation and allow visitors to have a wide grasp of the various activities of the harvest season.


MULTI-PURPOSE ROOM
For corporate events, conferences and presentations, the audience room at the Rocim winery is a place of excellence, surrounded by a design-tailored and calm atmosphere. This room is also perfect for group tastings, guaranteeing privacy and concentration. It can take up to 70 sitting places.

WINE BAR
This entertainment facility provides the visitor with the opportunity of tasting the different wines produced at the Herdade do Rocim, amongst other “specialties” from Alentejo … and much more. The capacity is for 100 sitting places.

AMPHITHEATRE
With an impressive acoustic, this space can be used for cultural events such as concerts, but also for social events (weddings, catering events, etc.), with capacity for 120 people.
